Grigor Dimitrov started at Australian Open with a straight set win over the wild card holder Christopher O'Connell 7-6(2) 6-3 6-3. The Bulgarian scored 15 aces and reached 98% in points won from first service and broke 3 times (from 13 break points).

In the second round Grigor Dimitrov will play No 105 Hyeon Chung of South Korea. It will be the first ever match of Dimitrov against 20-years-old Chung, who reached No 51 in 2015.

Grigor Dimitrov will be 15th seeded player of the main draw of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. In the opening round of Australian Open the Bulgarian will play No 238 Australian Christopher O'Connell. Possible second round opponents of Grigor are Hyeon Chung of South Korea, No 104, or Renzo Olivo of Argentina, No 78. Grigor could play another seeded player in the third round, and it is No 18 Richard Guasquet of France. The Bulgarian is in the 4th quarter of the draw and can meet No 2 Novak Djokovic in the 4th round. The first round matches start on Monday.

With the points won as champion of Brisbane International Grigor Dimitrov moved two positions up to No 15 in the ATP World Tour Ranking of the week of 9 January. The Bulgarian is now ahead of Roger Federer of Switzerland and Lucas Pouille of France who both lose one place.

The first week of tournaments of 2017 did not lead to major changes in Top 10. Andy Murray is No 1 ahead of Novak Djokovic and Milos Raonic as No 2 and No 3. Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori also stay at their positions. The only change in Top 10 is Gael Monfils who moves to No 6 and Marin Cilic moves to No 7. Dominic Thiem, Rafael Nadal and Tomas Berdych are the players from No 8 to No 10. The players ahead of Dimitrov from No 11 to No 14 are David Goffin, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Roberto Bautista Agut and Nick Kyrgios.

The next match of Grigor Dimitrov is at the first Grand Slam tournament of the year Australian Open from 16 January 2017.

Grigor Dimitrov won his first title after two and a half years after beating world number 5 Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-2 2-6 6-3 at Brisbane International. The run of Dimitrov to the title included 3 consecutive wins over Top 10 players - Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals, Milos Raonic in the semis and Kei Nishikori in the final. After losing all 4 past finals the Bulgarian finally succeeded to lift the trophy for 5th time in his career.

“It’s been pretty emotional the last year or so,” Dimitrov said. “This trophy means a lot. These 10 days I’ve had here have been the most fun I’ve had on a tennis court.”

Grigor Dimitrov is though to his second Brisbane International final after defeating the top seed and defending champion Milos Raonic of Canada. The Bulgarian saved a set point in the tie-break of the first set and then took it with 9-7. After breaking twice in the second set Dimitrov reached the victory with a result of 7-6(7) 6-2.

"Milos is one of the biggest servers out there. I knew what to expect, so I just had to execute it the right way," said Dimitrov. "I played a quite solid game to break him [in the second set] and after that, I was just solid overall. I was reading his serve pretty well after that. From then on, it was just smooth sailing."

On Sunday Grigor Dimitrov will face third seed Kei Nishikori. The Japanese tennis player won all 3 matches played against Dimitrov so far the last match being in the quarterfinals of Toronto Masters in July 2016.

"We played a pretty close match last year. I felt like I had my chance and my momentum," said Dimitrov. "I'm not playing anything next week, so I'm going to get out there and leave it all on the court."

Grigor Dimitrov advanced to the semifinals of the ATP 250 Brisbane International after defeating world No 8 Dominic Thiem of Austria in three sets 6-3 4-6 6-3.

“It was a good match, I expected to play a good match. Thiemis one ofthe contenders in any tournament,” Dimitrov said. “I thought I could have done a few things better but a win is a win. I’m just happy with my performance sofar. I thought I wascoming in to the net a lot in the first set and second and third I slowed down a bit. Next match I need to focus on myself and for sure serve a higher percentage of first serves.”

In the semifinals on Saturday Grigor Dimitrov will play top seed Milos Raonic of Canada who beat Rafael Nadal. Dimitrov has 2 wins and one loss over Raonic on ATP World Tour Level.

In the other semifinal Kei Nishikori will face Stan Wawrinka.

Grigor Dimitrov scored another win at Brisbane International to advance to the quarterfinals. In the second round Dimitrov beat Nicolas Mahut of France 6-2 6-4. The Bulgarian will take on 4th seed Dominic Thiem of Austria for the place in the semifinals. In the only match so far Dimitrov lost to Thiem in February last year at Mexican Open in Acapulco. The match of Dimitrov and Thiem is on Show Court 1 and will start not earlier than 4:30 pm local time (7:30 am CET).

Grigor Dimitrov started the new tennis season with easy win over Steve Johnson of the USA 6-2 6-3. In the second round Dimitrov will play the Frenchman Nicolas Mahut. In the only match on ATP World Tour level Dimitrov beat Mahut in Queen's Club in London in 2012.

In the first round of the doubles tournament Dimitrov/Kureshi will play Pierre-Hugues Herbert/Nicolas Mahut on Tuesday.
