Grigor Dimitrov entered ATP Top 100 for the first time in his career by moving 20 positions up to No 85. This way at his age of 19 Dimitrov became the top ranked Bulgarian tennis player ever. Back in year 2000 Orlin Stanoychev succeeded to reach No 96. Until the summer Grigor has only few points to defend which means that he would only move upwards in the ATP ranking.

The decision of ATP was to fine Grigor Dimitrov with 10'000 USD and deprive him of right to play at ATP tournaments during 3 weeks. This was caused by the incident of Grigor Dimitrov with the umpire after the match with Richard Berankis at the ATP Challenger in Helsinki. Seed 19 Stanislas Wawrinka of Swizterland defeated Grigor Dimitrov in the second round in Melbourne in 3 sets 7-5 6-3 6-3. Dimitrov will leave Australian Open with $32'000 of the prize money and 70 ATP ranking points which will make him the best ranked Bulgarian ever. Grigor Dimitrov won the match of the first round of Australian Open in straight sets 6-1 6-4 6-2 against No 38 Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan. With this win the points won so far become 70 which move Grigor to about No 85 in the ranking and this way he would become the highest ranked Bulgarian tennis player ever.

After losing the first set in a tie-break Grigor Dimitrov took two sets to arrive the victory and this way to enter the main draw of Australian Open. Dimitrov defeated the 202-cm high Dutch player Thomas Schoorel with score of 6-7(5) 6-3 6-1.
