In Day 1 of the new year Grigor Dimitrov was victorious against No 61 Brian Baker of USA. The Bulgarian needed 82 minutes to beat in two sets 6-3 7-6(8). For this first round win in Brisbane, Australia, Grigor gained 20 ranking points and $7750 of the prize money. Dimitrov dominated in the start of the match by winning 12 of the 13 games and reached to 3-0. When leading 5-2 he missed to score the set-ball but then closed the 1st set 6-3 on his serve. In the second set Dimitrov had 3 chances for early break but Baker saved them. Both players broke in the next games to 3-3. With 6-6 the set was decided by tie-break. Grigor reached a lead of 3-2 after mini-break. Then Baker took the lead reaching 6-4 and 2 set-balls. Dimitrov saved them and then saved two more set-balls. Double fault by the American gave Dimitrov lead by 9-8 and he won the match ball, the set and the match.

In the second round Grigor Dimitrov will face second seed Milos Raonic of Canada.
