Dimitrov Wins First Championship in Six Years

07 Jan 2024
In a close men's final that lasted 2 hours and 13 minutes, Grigor Dimitrov, the second seed, triumphed over the top seed Holger Rune with scores of 7-6 (5) and 6-4. This intense match featured only one service break.

Ranked 14th, Dimitrov secured his ninth career championship, marking his first win since the ATP finals in 2017.

The tight competition was evident in the first set's third game. Rune managed to keep his serve after a tough game that included nine deuces and seven game points. He saved a break point at 2-1, 30-40 after a long 33-shot rally.

Dimitrov, 32, eventually broke Rune's serve in the second set's eighth game, gaining a 4-3 lead. Rune fended off two match points in the following game, during which he received a time violation and scored an ace at 30-40.

Dimitrov then won the subsequent game without losing a point, serving his eighth ace and securing victory on his third match point. Rune had nine aces but also made three double faults. The 20-year-old, ranked eighth and aiming for his fifth career title, faced a tough opponent in Dimitrov.

Dimitrov, who last won in Brisbane six years ago, successfully defended three break points during the match, while Rune saved eight out of nine.
