28 Sep 2009
As Grigor Dimitrov could not defend the points gained last year he expectedly lost positions at this week's ATP ranking. Grigor loses 29 position and occupies 319. place.

In the same time by winning the doubles title in Trnava, Slovakia with Teimuraz Gabashvili Grigor Dimitrov reached his best ever doubles ranking position 413 by jumping 245positionsahead.

All other Bulgarians gain positions in the rankings - Tihomir Grozdanov moves up to 699. Valentin Dimov (705) moves ahead of Ivaylo Traykov (763).

#0: Actually, the reason many lower ranked players are sliding down the rankings is because of the ranking points change that was instituted from the beginning of 2009. Far more points are now offered at the very top of the game, and fewer are now offered at the lower tiers of Challengers and Futures. This means that the very top players monopolise the vast majority of points, and that firstly there is less to choose between lower ranked players, and secondly it is much much harder for lower ranked players to break into the upper echelons of the game.

For example, if a player won a Futures doubles title in 2008, he won 48 ranking points. Say he came back and successfully defended that title in 2009. This time, the points on offer for achieving exactly the same result, are only 33 points. So that's a net LOSS of 15 points. This means the player is going to fall down the rankings even though it was impossible for him to have done any better in that tournament.

So Grisha was pretty much destined for a fall in rankings unless he started winning vast amounts of matches, even though he has been doing very well this year and improving and making good progress.
